Two weeks ago faecal egg counts (FEC) were performed on Seabreeze, a 1 yr old Irish Sport Horse, which showed a FEC of 824 epg. Seabreeze was treated with a weight appropriate in-date dose of ivermectin at the time and today a faecal egg reduction test (FECRT) was performed which showed a zero-egg count.
Faecal egg counts in horses are one of the corner stones of effective parasite control programmes and when used routinely give valuable information and allow informed decision making.
Kaplan et al (2023) give a detailed guideline on diagnosing anthelmintic resistance using the faecal egg count reduction test.
